Understanding Tree Trimming & Pruning
Keeping your trees healthy and beautiful starts with knowing the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning services:
- Tree trimming: Focused on shaping and improving the tree’s appearance and is done every year during spring, summer and fall seasons.
- Tree pruning: Focused on removing dead, diseased, or dangerous branches to protect the tree’s health and your safety. This is a more extensive service than trimming and should be performed every 2 years in the spring, summer and fall season depending on the tree's growth.
Why Regular Tree Maintenance Matters
- Prevents branches from damaging your roof, vehicles, or nearby power lines.
- Enhances curb appeal and keeps your landscape looking polished.
- Protects the long-term health of your trees by promoting strong growth.
- Reduces the risk of falling limbs during storms or high winds.
Seasonal Considerations in the Midwest
- Dormant months: Late fall and early spring are ideal for most pruning to reduce stress on the tree.
- Before storm season: Remove hazardous limbs to minimize property damage.
- After storms: Assess and remove broken or weakened branches.

What’s the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning?
Tree trimming focuses on shaping trees for a neat appearance, while tree pruning removes dead, diseased, or hazardous branches to improve health and safety. Both are important for maintaining strong, attractive trees.
How often should I schedule tree trimming or pruning in Wauconda, IL?
Most trees benefit from professional pruning every 1–3 years, depending on species, location, and growth rate. A certified arborist can recommend the ideal schedule for your property. We reccomend scheduling a trimming once per year.
When is the best time of year for tree trimming in the Midwest?
Dormant months (late fall through winter) are ideal for most pruning, as trees are less stressed and pests are less active. However, hazardous branches can be removed any time of year for safety.
Do you handle large or hard-to-reach trees near power lines?
Yes, our certified arborists use the right equipment and safety procedures to work around power lines, rooftops, and other challenging areas, always prioritizing safety and compliance.
Will you remove all debris after trimming or pruning?
Absolutely. We leave your property clean and free of branches, leaves, and other debris, so all you’re left with is healthy, great-looking trees.

"I have used Mid-West Tree Service numerous times to clear trees and buckthorn around my property. Eric is outstanding to work with…prompt, professional and follows-thru. And he meets with me personally before, during and after every job. His crew is excellent and careful…and consistent. Oscar, the crew lead, does an terrific job on site and has been with Eric for 20+ years (which also says a lot about Eric’s approach to managing his people).

"When you watch them working, you can see and appreciate that they really know what they are doing and how to cut and lower down huge branches to avoid house damage. One of the trees I just had removed had quite a few obstructions which the team either moved or was able to work around. In 2017 they removed some major branches that were above my "Glass Sun Room"... This was EXTREMELY important that they did it right since even a small branch falling would have broken the glass roof. They did EXCELLENT jobs on all of the above. Also the team is very friendly and engaging and great to talk with when either they or I had questions or comments."
